After a challenging 6-month mission in Central African Republic (CAR) and a well-needed (and perhaps a bit excessive) 4-month break at home, I am back on the field! A short assignment as the Financial Coordinator in the Mali mission.
Part of me is overjoyed to finally go back to the field and do meaningful work. Another part of me is apprehensive of what is ahead. The truth is that the CAR mission had been tremendously demanding and by the end of it, I was in pieces. It took a solid two months before I felt “normal” again. Banal things like walking in the street at nighttime were little hurdles for me. Small talk became a language I had forgotten, socializing, an art for which I had lost interest. My time was spent with a select few; the few who demanded I speak beyond the rehearsed speech that satisfied most people. But thankfully, with some time and lots of love, the bits of strength that subtly chipped away during my mission mended. I am now a slightly different person but one who is stronger and ready to tackle new challenges! Mali, I am not sure what you have in store for me, but I know I will learn greatly from you and I am ready. Let the new adventure begin!
P.S. to friends and family: Thank you for being there when I needed you.
P.S. to Marc-Antoine: Without you, I could not have done all I have done. Thank you for remaining patient and understanding through all the meltdowns and emotions. Thank you for your unwavering love and support.
