Busy in the mountains

Dear Friends,

Dear Friends,

My predecessor, Lisa, left on Tues. We had a grand farewell celebration for her last Saturday. There was a football match between the staff of the medical team against staff of the logistics team. Happily it was a 2-2 draw. The day ended with beer and food at our local bar, Tambourix.

It was a busy time up in the mountains this week. As part of our ongoing community relations, we organize a series of information meetings with various groups to inform them of MSF principles and operating standards, and tell them about the medical activities that we provide to the community. The talks were generally well received, especially as we combined them with some health education on sexually transmitted infections (STI), free condoms and a demonstration on how to use the condoms correctly.

We also finally managed to open Bibwe Health Centre as a permanent health structure, so in total we now support 3 health centres- Mpati, Kivuye and Bibwe – from our base in Kitchanga. I am feeling relieved as the construction work finally comes to an end, and excited that I can finally concentrate full-time on our medical activities.

With Lisa leaving, there have also been some room changes in the house. Claudio and I now have a lovely bedroom with a big window and garden view and can convert our second room into a small living space. We have ordered some paint for the walls and Claudio is planning to paint a fresco on the ceiling and walls of our second room.

xx
