Hello, I am Wolfgang Funk, doctor for anaesthesiology, intensive medicine, emergency medicine and pain therapy. After 37 committed years in the business, I am now fulfilling my life's dream:
I worked for many years in German hospitals. My career path led me to a leadership position, which left less and less space for practical clinical work. But it was precisely this practical action as a doctor that prompted me to choose a profession in my youth.
So when I retired, I decided to fulfil a dream to which, until that point, I had only contributed to as a donor. The dream was to use the professional knowledge and skills that medicine has developed and that I have acquired to assist people who don't have access to optimal health care, and who often do not even have safe basic care.
The work with Doctors Without Borders has already brought new perspectives and challenges into my life. I completed two assignments in the Central African Republic and South Sudan, and returned home rounder and happier. And so I prepare myself for another two months in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Mweso, in the contested northeast of the country.
