Last week we had a running joke that the logistical department was sick… Our log couldn’t get out of bed for two days... His second-in-command, as well as two of our drivers had malaria and one out of the three cars was driveable…. This week the disease seems to have caught up to the medics…Not so funny… The hospital nurse is stranded in Nairobi… The doctor is off to South Africa for an HIV course… maybe… if they can get his visa organized before his flight… My Maman Marie has been medically evacuated to Lubumbashi. Hubert, the other nurse on my team is also in Lubumbashi for training for two weeks and the midwife is leaving on Friday for her holiday, which she has already postponed twice… . which leaves me, who was also in bed for two days this week, and the anesthetist, who sort of speaks French, in charge of the hospital, the five health centres and the 17 new cholera cases we’ve had since last week. Oy vey !

On a more positive note, we have found a surgeon for our project and he is arriving on Tuesday… Part of our medication order which is two months late is coming in the plane on Monday, which is amazing since we are about to run out of everything… and most incredibly, we are getting a second oxygen machine, which means we can now put two patients on oxygen at a time (provided of course the hospital generator is working)! Life is never boring in Kilwa, not that I thought it would be…
