Lucky is 28 years old and was diagnosed with XDR TB in June 2011; she is HIV negative and never had TB before. It all started in November 2010 with the screening programme run by the UK for the new entries in the country.
She went in for the screening along with her son as she & her husband felt a sense of responsibility towards health; not knowing that this decision will change her life. The diagnoses took 5-6 months as she was non-symptomatic but the X-ray showed that something was wrong.
They had started her on the 1st line of TB treatment as one of the three sputum samples had grown up something; but finally in June she gets a call while she was in bus at 5 pm that she has to be admitted in the hospital the same day. The TB nurses mentioned that she was resistant to the 1st line of TB treatment and now have to be on the 2nd line of treatment for which the doctors have to closely monitor her.
That moment changed everything, her love for her child, family; the way she felt or her outlook …..Things have now changed.
