My name is Kate and I am a Biomedical Scientist specialised in microbiology from the UK. I am currently swapping a career in the NHS to work with MSF, as I too believe that medical aid should be provided to the people who need it most. Previously, I volunteered to work in Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak to help set up and run a purpose built Ebola diagnostic laboratory which helped to reduce the turnaround time for a result from days to hours, positively impacting patient management and the control of the outbreak.
In my spare time, I hang up my lab coat to satisfy my other passion in life - travel! I love to explore places off the beaten track and create adventures with people from all walks of life. I also enjoy playing squash and badminton.
For my first mission to Jordan I will be working in MSF’s reconstructive hospital microbiology laboratory, set up to improve the quality of medical interventions for refugee patients with conflict injuries that have infectious complication. A big challenge facing healthcare in this region is the rise of antibiotic resistant infections which is monitored by testing carried out within the laboratory.
