Colombia has suffered an extremely violent conflict over the last 45 years. Guerrilla groups continue to fight against government forces, while paramilitary groups have re-emerged in many areas of the country. Civilians bear the brunt of the violence, fear and insecurity affect daily life for millions of Colombians caught in conflict-affected regions. In the Norte de Santander department (where La Gabarra is located), MSF teams assist communities isolated by conflict by providing health care to rural populations without health care access, internally-displaced persons, women victim of violence, sex workers and children.

Every day, thousands of Zimbabweans cross the border to South Africa risking their lives to flee the economic meltdown, ongoing political turmoil, food insecurity, and the collapse of the health system in their country. In response to the clear humanitarian and health needs of these refugees, MSF opened a project in 2007 to provide general primary health care, referral to existing secondary and specialised medical facilities, and other humanitarian assistance for vulnerable Zimbabweans in Musina, at the border with Zimbabwe.

Musina – 18 mars 2009

Burned out buildings in Faradje, Democratic Republic of Congo. A large portion of the town was burned on Christmas day when Ugandan rebels from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) brutally attacked and killed close to 100 people and abducted approximately 200. It is believed close to 1,000 people have been killed in the region since the LRA went on a rampage in retaliation for a joint military effort by Congolese, Ugandan and South Sudanese forces to flush them out of the area.

Faradje – janvier 2009

This eight year old girl was raped by her father: “I came back from school, I had lunch and was getting ready to go out again. My father offered me 150 francs to come to the bedroom with him. I said I didn’t want to go. But then he took me to the bed by force and did bad things to me.” This is the second time she has been raped this month. This time, she told her mother and they came quickly to the clinic.

MSF has launched the campaign, “Shattered Lives” focusing on sexual violence that affects millions of women, men, and children around the world. Urgent medical care within the first 72 hours is vital to limit serious long-term consequences. Sadly, many victims of sexual violence have nowhere to go. Even when care is available, stigma and fear stop many from seeking help.
