Olopa, Chiquimula, Guatemala – May 2005
In the municipality of Olopa, Chiquimula, live one of the most forgotten population of Guatemala. MSF was working in a project to improve the rural populations’ access to general health services, and in the prevention and treatment of Chagas disease.
Chagas is a little-known infectious parasitic disease transmitted into the human bloodstream by the bites of insects living and reproducing in rural areas. MSF teams provide diagnosis and treatment to general population, ethnic minorities and children under 15 years old. The photograph here was taken during home visits by MSF doctors.
