About James Maskalyk
James Maskalyk is an emergency physician and, when not in the field, lives and works in Toronto. His first mission with MSF was in Abyei, in a small hospital on the still contested border between North and South Sudan, and his blog from there became a book. He is in the field again, working and living in a refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya, home to 300 000 displaced Somali people.
I’m very moved on reading your account of the little boy who died while coughing…Robert my partner came with you to Abyei last week and it makes our separation easier to know that you’re all a team, helping such a desolate population … We feel very useless in Europe when reading or seeing photographs of Sudan. Your writings help understand a situation that escapes us totally and I’m very touched by your words, and the way you express tenderness, kindness, despair…thank you to you all..
We all have huge admiration for you, Not many people have the cojones to actually GO to africa and help. Many of us care deeply, want to help, but that little something, possibly fear, holds us back. I personally am inspired in my everyday life by what you write. I try to be a better person and show more compassion and share what I read with anyone who will listen. Sometimes when I am feeling down, or sorry for myself, I read your blog and it puts everything in perspective. I am so thankful for what you do and share everyday, I dont know what I will do/read when you leave! I should start printing !!

Just finished reading May 19th Globe & Mail article that published an article from the online journal of Dr. Maskalyk.
Extremely moving and brought to life the reality of the courage and selflessness of Canadians who sacrifice north american comforts to help the few they can under extremely desperate circumstances. I bow to Dr. Maskalyk for persevering.
